HALL OF FAME: British Greyhound Racing Board

No Hall Of Fame would be complete without the amazing exploits of Some Picture in 1997. The ultimate that can be achieved by any greyhound in modern day racing is the ‘impossible’ Derby treble. Namely the Scottish, English and Irish versions. Some Picture came within a whisker of becoming one of the most celebrated greyhound’s ever and, had he not struggled with illness in the Irish version, may well have completed what, until then, was regarded as nothing more than a wild dream. He first came to prominence at the back end of 1996 when winning the Eclipse at Nottingham in rather good style. That success was enough to gain his an invitation to the Select Stakes and he duly hacked up in the annual one-off race and was obviously out of the top drawer. However, what he achieved in 1996 paled into insignificance the following year as Some Picture confirmed himself as one of the outstanding greyhounds of the 90s. Trained by Charlie Lister, a no-nonsense northerner with a rough edge and the eye of an eagle when it comes to watching the greyhounds in his care, Some Picture’s campaign was carefully mapped out. The Regal Scottish Derby seemed a natural for this gloriously gifted animal and he breezed through the competition with hardly a blemish and was fast becoming a leading contender for the one that really mattered, the English Derby. It had not gone unnoticed by connections, however, that Regal were offering a £100,000 ($190,000) bonus to any greyhound that won their Scottish event and went on to take the English and Irish equivalents.  Just winning the Scottish Derby would be a dream come true to most greyhound folk but Lister had an air of confidence about him when it came down to talking about Some Picture. The greyhound lived up to some very high expectations with a glorious unbeaten run in the English Derby, his performance in the final marking him as one of the all time greats. All of a sudden, the ‘impossible’ began to look more than possible and, to some, even probable. The preparation was underway for the greatest achievement in modern day greyhound racing. The Irish held Some Picture in great esteem and he was installed as one of the favourites for the biggest race on the Irish calendar.  The early rounds went well and Some Picture was looking every inch capable of lifting the Triple Crown but, whether it was a change in routine, scenery, diet or a mixture of all, Some Picture was slightly off colour during the latter stages of the event. Almost miraculously, he still managed to battle his way through to the final but he was clearly not at his best and he took a whack at the start in the big final and that was to put paid to his chances. It was the end of a fantastic career and Some Picture was just one step away from becoming immortal in greyhound racing. His exploits, however, caught the eye of the national Press and he was to feature in countless articles, which compared the canine star with the best of his human counterparts.

Some Picture At Stud

Some Picture has done amazingly well at stud for only breeding around 100 litters before he died.  His best pups:

The Greatest Start Ever? - Greyhound Star (UK)

"The full significance of the premature death of Some Picture is beginning to dawn on the breeding world.  For some time it has been obvious that Charlie Lister's English/Scottish Derby winner was proving equally special at stud.  But this month, as his first three litters reach their second birthdays, we can add some statistical proof to the theories.  Our table shows his first four months at stud.  In total, Picture sired around 100 litters before his death of a suspected heart attack on April 15.  Although maiden sires do occasionally throw a freak litter - Numbers like these are very special":

DAM:

ELBONY VIOLET, BeB June ‘93

Elbony Violet won her first two races very impressively before an injury finished her racing career in her third race. Her bloodlines are impeccable. Violet’s sire, Ardfert Mick, won the 1991 Irish Champion Stakes and Irish Derby.  Violet’s dam, Lyns Fli, was a littersister to Slippy Blue, winner of the 1990 English Derby. Violet’s littermates are also extremely impressive:

The Lyns Fli Damline is very prepotent.  Look at the list of open and feature racers that have been produced:

Elbony Violet has produced open class racers in every litter to stud dogs: Right Move, Droopy's Harry, Shanless Slippy, Some Picture and Spiral Nikita. Offspring of Elbony Violet

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT FAT BOY'S FIRST PUPS:

Slim's Best, Wimbledon. 27.59 Wimbledon and English puppy derby runner up.

Slim Boy, Ireland. Consistent sub 29.00 seconds in Irish open races.

Slims Rocket, Walthamstow 640m open race winner Walthamstow.

Tell Mick, Walthamstow 640m open race winner Walthamstow.

Jedi Jess, Harlow. 415 open race winner and 592 competition winner at Harlow .

All of the above are from different litters and 4 of the dams were maiden/unproven.
FBS has also produced numerous good quality graded racers/winners at Walthamstow [the hardest grading in U.K.] over 475m , 640m and 840m.

I think this goes some way to showing what an excellent start FAT BOY SLIM has made and that he has produced some very good racers in his first few litters to hit the track.

“Not surprised! Always destined (Spring Season & Lyns Fli damlines) to be the best "Some Picture" dog at stud - and he wasn't bad!!!!! The start of things to come without a doubt.”

SLIMS BEST by Ferndale Winters (Spiral Nikita-Ferndale Toss)

April 1, 2004:

"Another great week for FAT BOY SLIM offspring , SLIM BOY went some way to compensate his 2nd round exit from the produce stakes by putting in a flying run around Clonmel on produce semi final night. competing in a 12 dog open stake he won his heat in a very fast 28.80 , this compares very well with the produce semi winners GELDROPS TOUCH and VELVET CASH who recorded 28.81 and 28.68 for their respective semi final victories. Also over at Youghal on the 23rd March , a july 02 , 80lb pup , ESSEX BOY CHARLES produced an amazing sprint clock of 17.66 seconds when winning a puppy sprint in only his 2nd race. this looks to be another FAT BOY SLIM pup right out of the top drawer. while over in england the Sept. 02 FAT BOY SLIM x SWALLOW TAIL litter , as profiled by Jim Reynolds in the racing post > produced no fewer than 4 winners this past week , around the tough Walthamstow circuit."

March 15, 2004:

"Was anyone at Clonmel last night to witness a blistering run from SLIM BOY? 28.95 around clonmel is a great performance and to do it in the 1st round of the produce stakes, even better. Last night not only was it the fastest time of the night (F.T.O.N) but he was also the only dog to break 29.00 seconds. for the tough 525 yds. he is a very lightly raced son of FAT BOY SLIM and is FBS's only runner in the prestigious produce stakes . SLIM BOY is one of only a few FAT BOY SLIM runners in Ireland and England but what a great start from FBS. FAT BOY SLIM must be the best value stud dog in ireland at only 500 euros. good luck to connections of SLIM BOY for the rest of the competition."

March 15, 2004:

"Yes i do like FAT BOY SLIM and i do have an interest in him. To answer nick b I would have to say he has done very well with his first pups as if you look at the numbers actually racing so far their are only approx. 30-40 racers and these are mainly from maiden bitches. I think that 2004 is going to be a very good year for FAT BOY SLIM as we should see 30 more LITTERS hitting the tracks in both Ireland and the U.K. during the course of the year. I just thought i would let GG members know what great value he is.....at the moment!"

“Fat Boy Slim's first runner in Ireland, ran out an ultra impressive winner. Slims Best , a Nov. 01 puppy having his first ever race , scorched around the tough Youghal race track in a brilliant 29.15s to win by over 8 lengths this was easily the fastest time of the night . This 72 pound black pup is bred [ Fat Boy Slim x Ferndale Winters ] and he looks to have a very bright future ahead of him.”

“In the first round of the Wimbledon Puppy Derby tonight, Slims Best, a November 01 son of Fat Boy Slim and Ferndale Winters recorded a scorching 3.85 sectional on the way to a FTON 27.79. Congratulations to all connections, this could be just the thing to kick start Fat Boys promising stud career.”

“Fat Boy Slim seems to me is producing strong staying type dogs, given that Slims Best has early pace he will prove to be a promising pup. “

“Slims Best clocks a sensational 3.81 split on the way to a FTON 27.59 in the Semis. Looks a pup right out of the Top Drawer.”

SLIM BOY by Sunray Dahilia (Slippy Blue - Hurry on Dahilia)

“Slim Boy ran very well. Trapped well and led all the way. Francie Murray had another dog in trap 6 who might have been a bit closer but for trouble a the first bend but the winner ran well and probably would have won anyway. 28.86 is good run for a young dog (especially in a 29.70 confined event), former track record holder Farloe Bond beat an open class field in 28.77 on the same night.”

PUPS ON THE FARM

“Delias litter to Slim are July 02 and have just begun schooling. One of them was reared in England by Mick Puzey and I believe he went to Ockendon for the first time on Friday. Look out for them soon at the Stow.”

“The Howth survivor/Fatboy Slim pups are now about 10 weeks old and look fantastic. I will certainly be looking at him for my bitches. “

ELBONY KENNELS STATEMENT

"We have used the sires we have because, right or wrong we thought at the time these were the right dogs for that particular bitch, regardless of any other factor including cost, distance etc. The reason for using an unproven dog is not to save a few quid, it is to utilize a line that may not be available elsewhere, for example we had the very first mating to Some Picture with Elbony Violet, this produced Fat Boy Slim, and a whole litter of class racers... according to rule No. 1 this mating would not have taken place....  Also you also miss the point on saleability, although not our first reason for using Some Picture for the above mating, the pups sold like hot cakes, the only pup advertised at 3 months old (Violets Princess - £10,000 refused early in her racing career) in the racing post, was sold immediately and another 30 calls followed, personally I thought this was a good tactical move on Ken's part!"
